With the Men's Six Nations Rugby Championship beginning this weekend, with England's first game at the Allianze stadium v Wales on Saturday 7th February 2026, kick off 4.10pm. Why not try my selective 'Twickenham pub crawl' from Richmond to the 'hallowed ground', and savour some of the most atmospheric pubs before the big games?

Richmond -Upon-Thames is just over 8 miles from Charing Cross, and reached by overland train or on the District Line on the underground. It is a vibrant, affluent and aesthetically pleasing area.

The pub crawl commences at:

17 Parkshot, TW9 2RG

Leaving the station turning right into the High Street before crossing the road and taking an immediate left along Sun Alley.

This well known Fullers rugby pub is at the bottom of the alley. The rugby memorabilia on the walls and ceiling throughout the building makes you immediately aware of history of the place, with images of famous players, past and present; and a superb collection of old rugby shirts proudly displayed throughout the pub. The atmosphere soon gets very lively, with supporters of both teams singing enthusiastically, I have a preference for the French, who are extremely entertaining. This is an 'earthy' establishment with little pretence, customers are real rugby aficionados.

Perhaps, a quick pint or two will generate a good start to your day, and put you in 'high spirits' before moving off to the next watering hole?

Turn immediately left out of the main entrance and along the picturesque Richmond Green. This tree lined, peaceful, and immense area of grassland gives the impression of a 'quintessential village' with its perimeter of beautiful residences.

This delightful walk passes a multitude of other pubs, shops, restaurants, and therefore very easy to get distracted. Discipline is required, and heading though Friars Lane, alternatively Water Lane down to the River Thames brings you to the next stop, right on the bank of the river:

Riverside, TW1 3DN

This place is susceptible to high tides and 'welly boots' are provided at the entrance should they be required. The views are amazing, not only of the nearby Richmond Bridge, but also for boats, pleasure craft, rowers and the award winning 'Georgian' style architecture of the Riverside development of offices, apartments and shops.

This pub is superbly furnished, decorated and its huge windows provide a truly fabulous ambiance for those that 'enjoy the moment' . Relish that pint, take in the glorious views, this is one of the best spots in Richmond.

Moving on and hoping that the brisk 20-30 minute walk along the river path to the next scheduled 'pit stop' will do something to aid the digestion of your beer intake.

Crossing the Richmond Bridge and descending the steep steps to the river path leading to Twickenham and our final location:

Riverside, Twickenham TW1 3DN

This delightful 17th century pub is my personal favorite, and like the White Cross is nestled right on the riverbank. This place is always packed, but the ambiance, views and food are well worth the wait. On match days, there are barbecues on the terrace along with portable serving areas for draught beer to ensure your visit is enjoyable.

Most rugby supporters frequent the very vocal 'Barmy Arms' public house, a very short distance away and directly opposite Eel Pie Island or King Street, with its numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants. But, nothing beats the magnificence of my selected three pubs which I have visited with family and friends on many of occasions and represent the true traditions of this glorious game.

All pubs listed will show games live on TV for those not blessed with a Twickenham ticket. I would suggest booking a table in advance should you want to eat.

Just savour the occasion of match day, the delights of this beautiful part of England and revel in being part of this friendly community.

Upcoming game dates:

Saturday 7th February ko 4.10pm

England v Wales

Saturday 21st February ko 2.10pm
